How to strengthen know-how on sustainable electricity?
CIGRE – the International Council on Large Electric Systems – elaborates unbiased international technical guidelines for the power system including technical and market aspects. It provides the platform for knowledge sharing and networking. More than 3,500 experts from across the globe actively collaborate in structured work programs.
The World Bank has a strong focus on African electricity system developments. World Bank staff have the challenge to prioritize which infrastructure investments have the best multi-criteria benefit/cost ratios.
Together, the World Bank and CIGRE enhance sustainable electricity projects and know-how transfer through targeted efforts to disseminate suitable CIGRE work results to institutions and companies in sub-Saharan Africa.
CIGRE and the World Bank have signed an MoU in Paris on 26th August 2018

Why Africa?

- High economic growth rate that needs reliable power supply as enabler
- Huge hydro & solar resources
- Population is spread over wide areas and different countries
- Promising benefits from paradigm shift in the power system towards affordable renewable resources which are locally available
- digitalization to control distributed generation and loads locally in microgrids
- transmission technology to use large hydro & solar resources across regions
- Understanding alternative market designs versus monopoly can boost renewables.
Target Partners
With the ongoing working group, we reach out to managers, engineers, economists and planners as well as academia in the following institutions in order to improve dissemination of CIGRE work results in ways that support them and the electricity users in their countries best:
- Energy ministries, regulators and legislators;
- Electric utilities incl. transmission and distribution system operators, generators, energy suppliers;
- City administrations;
- Large industrial and mining users of electricity;
- Microgrid/nanogrid installation and maintenance companies and community groups of village leaders
- Universities and Centers of Excellence
The first activity in the working group is a survey to learn about the precise needs of those target groups as well as find out which know-how is available to be shared within the region. With this, we will sharpen the scope of the knowledge transfer activities.
