Defining power system resilience

The definition of resilience has alluded utilities and standard authorities. Resilience is more than just “bouncing back”. CIGRE Working Group SC C4.47 has researched and formulated a definition as well as key actionable measures as an integral part of the definition. This paper covers the process and derivation of the definition as well as the actionable measures. Engineering and lifetime management of outdoor HV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS)

GIS has been in use since the 1960’s due to its excellent insulation properties enabling compactness of switchgear and substations. The majority of GIS installations are indoor; however, GIS application outdoors is also common. The exposure of the outdoor GIS to the environment leads to maintenance challenges. A newly formed working group will investigate the optimal design and lifetime management strategy of outdoor GIS. Benefits include optimization and manufacturer guidelines to ensure increased reliability.Read More

Sustainability, power systems and CIGRE

In December 2015 the Paris Agreement was signed on climate protection in connection to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the UN in September 2015. CIGRE actively supports 9 of the 17 SDG’s via Working Groups, conferences and production of papers, Technical Brochures and articles. This reference paper describes how CIGRE contributes to global sustainability and the SDGs, partly by adhering to sustainable organizational practices itself, and even more importantly by supporting many SDGs through its global work related to energy, emissions and climate change.Read More

Leveraging Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) data for better Protection, Automation and Control Systems (PACS), PS1 SC B5 colloquium Tromsø, Norway

The Preferential Subject No.1 of the CIGRE SC B5 2019 colloquium in Tromso, Norway, was entitled “Leveraging PMU data for better Protection, Automation and Control Systems”. A total of 28 papers by authors from 11 different countries, were received for this Preferential Subject. 8 topics were proposed for a more focused discussion, 12 questions were raised and 29 contributions from 7 countries were submitted.Read More
