Evaluation of Voltage Stability Assessment Methodologies in Transmission Systems

Voltage stability refers to the ability of any electrical power system to ensure acceptable voltage performance at all buses whenever a disturbance occurs.

In this webinar, the definitions of voltage stability have been revisited and further illustrated in relation to distributed energy resources and power electronics interfaced devices. Several reports on voltage stability have been published in recent decades by CIGRE and IEEE, such as CIGRE Technical Brochures 91, 128, 231, and 504, and IEEE Technical Report 90TH0358-2, and a more recent one on the contribution of distributed energy resources to system stability (IEEE Technical Report PES-TR22).

These valuable references cover the fundamentals of available indices, analysis methods, and industry experience in voltage stability assessment in conventional systems dominated by synchronous generators. Nevertheless, due to the transition towards power systems dominated by power electronics interfaced devices (which are widely applied in new technologies for renewable generation, storage, compensation, and responsive demand), the methods for assessing voltage stability and the circumstances under which it occurs require revision. This webinar, organized by the CIGRE JWG C4/C2.58/IEEE Evaluation of Voltage Stability Assessment Methodologies in Transmission Systems, provides an overview of the theory and applicability of established and emerging methods from both academic and industry perspectives, touching upon their relevance to modern networks.

The webinar is intended for planning and operation engineers as well as researchers, offering valuable insights into current challenges and future directions in voltage stability assessment.
