CIGRE UKWN Mentoring and Networking Event

Women in engineering hit a new milestone with the launch of the UK Women’s Network for the world’s association on large electric systems, Cigre, in September. The event was themed around Mentoring. 40 women representing 18 companies and 5 universities at different stages in their career attended the event.

The new bespoke mentoring platform inspired the members.  The event was about sharing experiences and thinking about how mentoring could support their career development. The platform will allow members of the UKWN to find mentors and mentees, both male and female across CIGRE member companies and universities – in and out of the UK.

As part of the day’s events, there was also a‘Meet & Chat’that was aimed at giving participants the chance to meet and talk to 3 different people on any subject of their choice. These one-to-one discussions really helped participants relax and find out more about each other. The session lead Nathalie Huyghues-Beaufon, left everyone smiling with her lively and humorous leadership style. The main aim of the‘Meet & Chat’was to get better at networking to confidently share our views.

‘Mentoring Assessment Exercise’was a speed networking session with a twist. Each participant was given the chance to talk to and undertake assessments with five different people.  The assessments were aimed at getting participants to think about different topics such as confidence, negotitaing  skills, motivation, future prospects and how they all  relate to mentoring.

The consensus from the attendees is that it exceeded expectations. The organising team received great feedback. The next thing will be to further develop the mentoring platform and get it up and running.

CIGRE Women in Engineering Forum

The role of the CIGRE National Committees in promoting women onto CIGRE work bodies was identified as a key focus area

CIGRE Paris 2016 hosted the inaugural CIGRE Women in Engineering Forum. The 3 hour event was a great opportunity for women already active with CIGRE, and those engaged more widely within Power Engineering, to meet with each other and with representatives of CIGRE’s governing bodies and share views on the importance of greater gender diversity and how this can be achieved. An audience of women and men heard presentations from a variety of inspirational woman from around the world who already engaged in power engineering leading to a lively debate over practical actions that can be taken within CIGRE to move this topic forward. In particular the role of the CIGRE National Committees in promoting women onto CIGRE work bodies and governance assemblies was identified as a key focus area.

The speakers were Ms. Wanda REDER (Chief Strategy Officer, S&C Electric Company, IEEE Fellow), Professor Tianshu BI (BEng M. Phil, Phd), Mrs. Khayakazi DIOKA (Pr Eng, MSAIEE, Chief Engineer: Transformers and Reactors, Eskom), Dr.  Ir. Susana ALMEIDA DE GRAAFF, (System Operations, International Development at Tennet TSO BV, CIGRE Incoming Technical Committee Member C2), EUR ING Dr. Biljana STOJKOVSKA (PhD CEng MIET, Innovation NIC project Manager, National Grid, CIGRE Chairwoman Women’s Network UK (WNUK) and Dr. Ruomei LI (Chairwoman of CIGRE women’s network China, Co –chair of the taskforce for the organisation of the CIGRE Women in Engineering Forum).

The openness and honesty within the room during the event was certainly refreshing and feedback was overwhelmingly positive. All attendees were encouraged to continue to promote the initiative.
